From the time I was a little child I watched my parents sit in silence. Every single morning without fail. Breath work. Stillness. Extended periods of both. It was non-negotiable. It was simply part of their day.
That is real yoga.
Not the $100 pants. Not the Instagram poses. Not the trendy studio with the curated playlist. What I grew up witnessing was something far deeper and far more demanding than anything you’ll find in a wellness influencer’s feed.
Here’s what western culture gets wrong about yoga and wellness. It’s not about how you look. It’s not about maintaining a certain physique. Real yogis and sadhus have no ego. They are not doing this to look good. They are doing this to go deeper in life.

The Poses Are Just The Door
The stretches, the flows, the poses you see in studios everywhere, those are just the beginning. They are a prelude. A way to prepare the mind for the real work. And that real work is where everything changes.
For those who think they are doing yoga, you actually are. But you are scratching the surface. True yoga will take you places in your mind, body and soul that you have never been before.
What Happens When You Go Deeper
When you learn to sit in silence and be with the breath for extended periods of time your mind truly does elevate. You go somewhere. You learn patience. You begin to evoke an extended sense of calm within that only comes from this kind of practice.
Sitting in silence for extended periods gives you agency over your whole life. Your emotions. Your thoughts. Your feelings. In a way that nothing else can.
You learn to be more at peace from moment to moment. You see things differently. You have greater clarity. You are not the same person who sat down. This practice offers a total transformation and I say that not as a trend or a talking point but as someone who has lived it and watched it transform the people closest to me from childhood. If you want to go deeper into mindfulness and meditation this is a great place to start.
How True Yogis Actually Live
True yogis don’t just show up to a studio a few times a week. They live this. Mindfulness is not something they schedule. It is woven into every part of their lives.
They sit in extended periods of silence. They do not eat meat. They do not drink alcohol. Not because of a diet trend but because those things disrupt the natural rhythms of the body. Our bodies are not made to process meat or alcohol. They are made to move with the natural world, not against it. Everything that takes you away from your natural state takes you further from the real practice.
What Real Yoga Is Actually About
Real yoga is ultimately about one thing. Connecting on a deeper level with something greater than yourself. Call it God, the universe, consciousness. The stretches and poses are simply the door. What lies beyond that door is where the real transformation happens.
That’s what I grew up watching every morning in the stillness before the world woke up. Two people, breath, silence, and something I didn’t fully understand as a child but have spent my whole life moving toward.
Where To Start Tomorrow Morning
You do not need an hour. You do not need a studio. You do not need special equipment or training.
Start with three to five minutes. That’s it.
Find a quiet place. Sit outside in the morning if you can and just bask in it. Turn off all your devices. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and simply do nothing. Just be. No stress. No rigid rules. Just be.
When thoughts come, let them go. They will come. That is normal and expected. You do not need to stress about it. Simply let them come and let them go. Like a ripple in a lake. Allow it to come and then let it wash away slowly.
This is not about turning your mind off. It is not about focusing on the breath in a rigid way. It is simply about presence. Learning to be present to elevate your awareness and gain clarity.
Three to five minutes every morning. That is your starting point. That is where the real yoga begins. And if you are looking for ways to weave this kind of practice into your everyday life, start with self-care in real life.
